Apollo 4 -
Saturn V's Grand entrance
The launch of Apollo 4 was the 1st launch of the Saturn V that would take us to the moon. An unparalleled thrill for media observers like Walter Cronkite and those watching and listening to it over the broadcast. From miles away in the hardened block house Walter Cronkite reported as they tried holding the windows in their frames while the ceiling began to come apart. the tremors from the Florida launch were picked up from as far away as New York.

Apollo 11 - Tense Landing
In Neil Armstrong's position, looking out at the moon zipping by, searching for a safe landing spot ( landing with 16 sec.s of fuel left!) In the window, Neil in his helmet & reflection of the control panel with the fuel alarm & program 1202 alarm (the 1202 alarm indicating navigation computer overload -it took a cool head with a good memory to know it would be OK - if it did not persist). Reflected in the rolled up window shield is Neil's hand on the control taking the lunar module in for a white-knuckle landing. Capcom responded to Armstrong's "the Eagle has landed" with "thanks, you had a lot of guys turning blue down here".

TEMPORARILY SOLD OUT
The Touch of Apollo
When we set out to touch the moon, we didn't realize it was then that we would finally experience the "Overview Effect”. In reaching out, we expanded our understanding of where we came from. Here we see an astronaut touching Apollo with earthrise in the background.
"I believe that this nation should commit itself to achieving the goal, before this decade is out, of landing a man on the Moon and returning him safely to the Earth. No single space project...will be more exciting, or more impressive to mankind, or more important...and none will be so difficult or expensive to accomplish..." President John F. Kennedy
